The Most Unflattering Card Of The Year

As a person with a history of unflattering photos this one ranks as an all-time unflattering one.  I'm sure there have got to be better CC photos out there from last year.  How about this, and this, and this.

Heartbreakingly Great Names #32: Biff Pocoroba

**This series highlights those few lucky [and unlucky] athletes that have names that make you stop and do a double take.**

When I think of Biff, I think of only one thing:

And I guess this card comes in second.  Biff Pocoroba was a back up catcher for the Braves for 10 seasons in the late 70's and early 80's.  He also made the 1978 All-Star team.

Cover Of The New Mars Attacks #1

Here's the front cover of issue #1 of the New Mars Attacks comic series from IDW Publishing that will expand well beyond the story given in the 1962 Topps card series:

The comic is available in June and is $3.99 while the card set arrives in July.

We Know A Little Bit More About The Upcoming Mars Attacks Set

First, we have photos of what the card box looks like so we now know it's going to be called either Heritage Mars Attacks or Mars Attacks Heritage.  I hope its Mars Attacks Heritage but that "Heritage" is oddly placed so it could go either way.

We also know that each box is going to have a 1-of-1 sketch card...which could be awesome in my opinion.  I haven't seen this available yet for pre-order yet  [the set arrives in July] but I'm going to make this my first hobby box purchase in over two years.  Can't wait!

TheHitKing has done it again...this time unloading a mother load of 2011 Allen & Ginter mini in exchange for my Jay Bruce relic I pulled here...I might have enough now to start my own Frankenset!

Sometimes the backs of these minis can be just as are some scans of the reverse:

More Photoshopped Cards From 2012 Topps Opening Day

In the new 2012 Topps Update you've got two types of photoshopped cards.  You have the new players shown in their new uniforms for the first time plus, this year you have your first shot to see the Marlins with their new name and new uniforms.

Here are some of the Miami Marlins cards I've found

A Jose Reyes insert:

2012 Topps Update  Elite Skills #ES-1 Jose Reyes
Including what looks to me the first card with the Marlins road jerseys:

2012 Topps Update #32 Anibal Sanchez
This is a great card photoshopped or not:

2012 Topps Update #92 Mike Stanton
The photoshopping seems most obvious on this card:

2012 Topps Update #79 Hanley Ramirez
 And one last one:

2012 Topps Update #119 Ricky Nolasco
Like it or not I'm going to just have to accept photoshopping as something that is just not going away.  Rather than bitch about it every year I've decided to just celebrate it. Here are five first-time cards with players with their new teams.

First we have Gio Gonzalez who was sent from the Athletics to the Nationals in a trade this December in the A's semi-annual fire sale.

2012 Topps Update #76 Gio Gonzalez
The Royals took advantage of Melkey Cabrera's strong season in 2012 and dealt him to the Giants for left-hand pitching help in Jonathan Sanchez.

2012 Topps Update #49 Melky Cabrera
This one is a little sad for me as Michael Cuddyer was one of my favorite Twins players.  He signed a three year $30 million dollar contract over the winter.
2012 Topps Update #39 Michael Cuddyer

Sergio became a Blue Jay after a trade with the White Sox.

2012 Topps Update #133 Sergio Santos
Trevor Cahill was also traded by the A's to the Diamondbacks basically for prospect Jarrod Parker.  Cahill gives the Diamondbacks a pretty strong 1-2 punch to their pitching staff with 21-game winner Ian Kennedy.

Flynn/Rodgers Is Not Rodgers/Favre

I'm really excited for Matt Flynn to be a Seahawk and I hope he does really well.  Hopefully the Packers will get to play the Seahawks next season.  And although the media would try to make it into something like the first time Aaron Rodgers played Brett Favre after he left the Packers I don't think Packers fans have any anamocity towards Flynn leaving.  He was never going to get his chance unless Rodgers got hurt and so I wish him well.  He'll also be one of the few non-Packers players that I collect.

Top 4 Cards From My 2012 Topps Opening Day Rack Pack

These next few days on the blog are going to be a bit of a 2012 Topps Opening Day overload. I've got a blaster video, individual pack ripping videos, plus this post. Everybody is focused on Heritage and so I'm changing things up a little bit. Let's begin with the top four cards from my 2012 Topps Opening Day rack pack.

We get our first look at newly acquired players in their new uniforms.  Topps Series 1 only has Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes in their new uniforms, while Opening Day has the lesser known players and all the Miami Marlins have their new uniforms as well.

Blue borders beat gold borders every day of the week!  Plus the blue makes the Royals cards that much better.

Another great part of the Opening Day set is the return of the foil stamped numbered cards!!!  Gone are the computer printed numbering that was present on the past few years.

I'm not sure if Clayton makes a bad baseball card.  That used to be the case for Russell Martin but I think that the mantel has shifted.

I enjoy cards that show older players looking that weird?  Chipper's nearly twenty seasons away from this card.  One of my favorite Hank Aaron cards is his 1976 card that shows his long career on his expression.  Or take a look at Willie Mays cards from his non-Giants days. Or the oldest player card of them all, Minnie Minoso.

Show and Tell #115: Minis Needs List Beware!

Reader Jeff recently sent me some minis from my 2012 Topps minis and the various needs lists from 2011 Allen and Ginter.

He also included one of the 2008 Topps Obama Presidential set sticker I was missing.  Thanks Jeff!

I've also recently tracked down two more stickers.  I've been working on this set for three years now and I think I will try to get it over with before the next presidential election.  If you happen to have any of the cards I need, please drop me an e-mail.

Are you ever searching and looking for newly listed rare Andy Pafko cards and you are asked to "browse her pics" and that "new hot girls join every minute"?  It seems to happen to me pretty regularly.

When people have the debate about if kids or adults run the hobby, I think COMC has firmly come down on one side of the argument.

And just to clarify, I realize that they don't approve these ads any more than I approve the ad that is running under the post currently.  I mean, anytime I post of card of a political candidate their ad inevitably appears even though I probably don't support them personally.

The Unbubbling I've Been Waiting For!

It's here, it's here!  The Unbubbling Video that I've been waiting to make for what seems like FOREVER!  This should it no way look bad upon the person who sent it too me.  I've been like a a 9 year old on December 24th waiting and waiting to rip open this package?

Why all the fuss over a little package?  Well, watch the video and see!

It's interesting to note that although Pafko had cards in 1951 and 1952 he was absent from the set in 1953 and again in 1955.  Who knows why other than Topps only included so many players in those early sets.  He played a complete season with the Dodgers in 1952 and in 1954 he was with the Milwaukee Braves and hit 19 home runs and 85 RBIs so it certainly wasn't production that caused him to be cut from the checklist.

Should Older Stars Retire From Signing Cards At Some Point?

In one of Tom The Ripper's newest videos a Stan Musial 2012 Topps Tribute autograph is pulled.  This is a Jake Break, so as usual Jake he didn't seem too excited about it when it was pulled but it is currently the only copy available for sale on eBay.

The card bring to mind some thoughts that I'm not really considered before in card collecting.  In the same way that all professional athletes face a time in which they won't be able to continue on, do players face the same sort of situation in signing collectibles.  No matter how high  public demand might be, should elderly stars just not sign cards and memorabilia at some point?  Granted, I haven't been able to see any of the other card Stan the Man signed for Topps Tribute to compare the signature quality as this is the only card listed currently but I personally just feel bad looking at the card and seeing that signature.  I hope that Stan isn't being exploited in contributing to the set.

I realize that young players tear off hundreds of autographs per set for the various card companies but Stan is currently 91.  If I were to ask my 85-year-old grandmother to sign ninety-nine copies of something it would be a few day ordeal of making them anywhere close to legible and possibly with someone holding the pen with her.  I just hope that's not the case for Mr. Musial.

The Window For Jim Thome Cards As A Twin Is Closing Fast

For Jim Thome fans, Ryan Howard's ankle injury and infection have given us a chance to see Thome play first base and start fairly regularly.  But his return to the Phillies after a brief stop in Cleveland at the end of last season is really closing the window on any more "Thome as a Twin" cards.  He has several cards in 2012 Topps Series 1 as a Twin but I'm afraid that by the time we get to Heritage [which is in three days...which means I should stop by Target and see it anything has been put out yet!] his days as a Twinkie on cardboard might be gone for good.

Here are my latest Thome pickups:

Alan Bean Stamp Relic

I have been eyeing these astronaut relic/stamp cards for a more than a year now and then I stumbled upon one at the right price at a card show.  Alan Bean was the pilot of the Lunar Module on Apollo 12 and was the four man on the Moon.  If you are going to be the fourth person to do something I really can't think of anything better.

2010 Panini Collection Souvenir Stamps #13 Alan Bean Relic #080/100

Since leaving NASA, Alan has made a name for himself as a painter of astronaut and lunar art.  Here's an example:

As for the stamp included, here is the complete stamp.  For all you philatelists out this is Scott Catalogue  USA: 1434 and 1435.  These were produced in 1971 and there is another version of the Alan Bean relic that features the other side of the adjoining stamp.

Ah, yes, something to add to the "must buy" list.
