A Captured White Whale and The Future Of The Blog

First, let's start with the good news.  My quest for a 1952 Topps #1 Andy Pafko card...a.k.a. my White Whale...has reached a happy conclusion.  I won an eBay auction for a very rough copy and I think I am going to have it authenticated and slabbed for posterity.

I'm certain that a lot of you would pass up this card particular card if you were on the market for a '52 Topps #1...possibly at any price.  The front has tap on it and turning the card over...

...you can see that the tape got a used a little too much on the back as well.  This particular card was $39 on eBay and I bought it on a buy it now listing.  I saw this card listed and bought it immediately as if this particular card was screaming in my brain "BUY ME YOU IDIOT!"  Let me explain...

When I first started collecting cards in 1986 and 1987 my prized card was Roger Clemens' 1985 Topps rookie card.  I remember getting it a little after Roger famously struck out 20 batters in a game.  This was, of course, before the days of penny sleeves and top loaders that were available at nearly any large chain store so, obviously, the only option was to store your cards another way.

My method of choice was to grab the tape and tape the cards into a notebook.  And so more than 20 years later, the Andy Pafko card I have been searching for reminded me of one of my personal all-time favorites.  It was fate!

Now that my great news is out of the way here's the less great news: I'm about to be giving up cardboard in my life for a year.  In about 10 days I'll be moving to...wait for it...Ukraine!  Bet you didn't see that one coming.

Long story short, my wife is a political scientist that studies human trafficking.  She is working on her PhD dissertation which requires some in-person research in Ukraine as well as a few other Eastern European countries.  We will be living in the city of Kharkiv and no, it isn't anywhere near Chernobyl.

So we are packing our bags and hitting the road for a year, meaning my days of easily accessible cardboard are almost over...The collection is boxed up in a closet currently and so the blog will be slow, slow, slow in terms of new card posts for the next year or so....  I'm not quitting the site altogether, I just don't think I'll have too much to write about card wise.

On the other hand, I went on hiatus before in 2009 and I turned out posting pretty regularly and finally just gave up on the whole charade so to be honest who really knows how active the blog will be in the near future?  To "celebrate" in the next few days I'll be posting a contest for a 1-of-1 Mars Attacks Heritage sketch card so keep an eye out for that.

Whoa! Moving to Ukraine is kinda cool. Question: if I were to mail your Mars attacks sketch #2 tomorrow would you get it on time? I've got the day off and was planning on hitting the post office.

Just today a friend told me his daughter is going to Prague to study for a year. I think it would be pretty cool to spend time overseas knowing I was coming back in a year.
The bad news is having to pack up everything.

btw...congrats on the Pafko. If I was looking for it like you were I'd grab that one in a heartbeat. Nothing wrong with a well loved card.

Very cool! I did something similar on a much smaller scale in 2010. My then fiancee now wife was working/studying in Moscow - I joined her for 2 of the 5 months she was there. It was complicated but an incredible experience.

FWIW not sure about Ukraine but they had Panini in Moscow: http://apacktobenamedlater.blogspot.com/2011/10/2010-cport-stickers.html

Schrödinger's cat of trading cards or can you really have a mint Topps Finest card from the 90's?

They are the Schrödinger's cat of trading cards -- Topps cards from the 90's with the plastic protector still on them.  They are cards that are out the pack and yet you truly don't know their condition because there is that second sheet of plastic. When I can't get to sleep, sometimes my mind turns to the card collector's unanswerable existential question: Can there really be a mint Topps Finest card when the protective coating is on the card? Just like the cat in Schrodinger's box that is either alive or dead, the card can be mint or damaged by the plastic protector and there is no way to know without ripping that sucker off.   To me it is like grading a card still in the wrapper. You don't know the condition of the card until you open the pack, just like you can't really know the condition of the card until that annoying plastic coating is removed.  For years, I've been doing just that in a series of posts I've called "Free the Finest....

The 1st Heartbreaking Contest: Help Me Identify My Dumpster Cards

I've been trying to come up with some kind of original contest to do and on Friday everything came into place like a lightening bolt from the sky. In the morning I got the garbage together and walked over to the two garbage bins that service the entire town home complex that I live at. I tossed the bags in the trash and was turning around when something caught my eye...This is what I saw: THE HORROR! Someone had decided to get rid of their baseball card collection the worst way possible [besides trying to charge $2,500 for them on eBay ]...It was just starting to rain as well so I ran into the house, got myself a shovel, and was able to save three boxes of cards that had been covered by another box and missed the rain entirely: So had I stumbled upon a box of 1952 Mickey Mantles that some careless mother had just thrown out? Was there a T206 Honus just waiting for the auction block? Sadly no...two of the boxes had mixed singles in them and one had a complete set. Here's w...

Examining Marvel's Power Grid From 1993 Skybox Marvel Universe Packs

I think it is fair to say that at the point Skybox issued this Marvel Universe set in 1993 it was the most important card set of my young life. Way more important than any football or baseball set. It's probably the only set as a kid I was able to complete from buying wax packs and I was always on the hunt for the rarer insert cards. I recently found a whole bunch of random packs at a card show for 25 ¢ each.  One thing I appreciated now is that on the inside of the wrappers Skybox and Marvel give us a handy guide to understanding the powers score that each hero or villain receives on the back of each card. You've got categories like agility, durability, energy projection, mental powers, and speed each broken down score by score in their 1-7 scoring system. You don't get all the information on one pack and it's pretty hard to make out some of the scores so I've gone through all my wrappers and made a chart of each power and super hero or two tha...
