Which Milwaukee Braves player autographed this ball?

For an upcoming post, I'm trying to identify all the signatures on a baseball I was recently gifted and I'm turning to you, Dear Reader, to give me your thoughts on whose signature is this.

Here's what I know for sure:

It is very likely a Milwaukee Braves player from the 1950s or early 60s and his first name is Bob.

Here's the list of "Bobs" from the Milwaukee Braves era.

  • Bobby Avila
  • Bob Boyd
  • Bob Buhl (it's not Bob Buhl because his signature is already on the baseball in another location and it is clearly different.)
  • Bob Giggie
  • Bob Hartman
  • Bob Hazie
  • Bob Hendley
  • Bob Malkmus
  • Bob Ruselli
  • Bob Rush
  • Bob Sadowski
  • Bob Shaw
  • Bobby Thomson
  • Bob Thorpe
  • Bobby Tiefenauer
  • Bob Uecker (man I wish it was Bob Uecker!...but I doubt it.)
  • Roberto Vargas

If not a player, it could be a coach as there is a Braves assistant coach on the ball elsewhere.

My personal guess is that it is Bob Boyd, which if true, would be pretty great. He played in the Negro Leagues and was the White Sox first African-American player in 1950. He finished his career with a single season with the Braves in 1961 and his nephew is the Red Sox reliever 'Oil Can' Boyd.

Here's what I see in the signature but I realize I'm might be doing some wishful thinking.

What are your thoughts? Is it Boyd?

I agree with you that it looks like Bob Boyd. When I saw the top picture, I immediately thought that B was the first letter of the last name.

Looking at known Bob Boyd autograph balls on the Net, I very much think it's his signature. Other examples have the same relatively small "B" at the beginning and large "d" at the end--see https://www.ebay.com/itm/363026183134?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=363026183134&targetid=1263433204974&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=9003598&poi=&campaignid=14859008593&mkgroupid=130497710760&rlsatarget=pla-1263433204974&abcId=9300678&merchantid=6391444&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5ZSWBhCVARIsALERCvyy6nxyWZZ_AKjHbLtgJCfHxewh0g1dJVNA_nubqhpRqV6xgCZeinIaAmPTEALw_wcB for an example. The first names look very similar to my eyes.

I'm terrible at this stuff. I didn't even see the B until you pointed it out. I kept seeing a K when I stared at the signature.

I'm thinking it's Boyd too...good luck tracking it down!

Thanks guys! I think I will have a couple more mysteries to solve on this ball.
