Sometimes you'll go to a card show and you'll start seeing the same card randomly from table to table or maybe you'll start seeing the same player that you maybe haven't seriously considered collecting. This is what happened to me at my last card show and Washington Senators slugger Frank Howard. In the stacks of discount vintage cards he kept reappearing and over the course of a Sunday I picked up five cards and a coin.
We begin with Howard's 1970 Topps Super which were jumbo-sized photo cards with a glossy finish and bright yellow statistics just like 1970 Topps. It seems appropriate that Howard was featured in the over sized Super set as Howard himself was over-sized at six feet eight inches tall. Howard also wore huge framed glasses towards the end of his career which were certainly the style of the 1970's.
From two different sellers, I pieced together three Howard 1969 Topps Deckle Edge cards. Am I the only one who has impressed a relative or friend who is into paper crafting that you know what a deckle edge is based on this set?
Although the odd borders add something to the set, Topps seemed to phone it in here as they used black-and-white photograph and zero information on the back except the players name and card number. The fact that only 35 cards make up the set shows that their heart really wasn't behind this odd-ball set.
This one is another of the 1971 Topps Coins I showed off in an earlier Card Show Treasure Trove post. Yes, I paid a $1.00 for this one.
The backs of the coins vary as you go up the checklist. Coins #1-#51 were backed in brass, #52-#102 had chrome backs, and #103-153 had blue backs.
And I saved the best for last as I found a 1960 Topps #132 which is Howard's rookie card. After playing a handful of games in the 1958 and 1959 seasons, he would be named the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1960 with a respectable line of 23 home runs, 77 RBI, and .268 batting.
