Genius Covers: American Splendor

On July 12th the creator of the American Splendor comic, Harvey Pekar, died. He is my favorite comic author and I have just about every collection of the comic they've put out, the most famous being the Our Cancer Year graphic novel. That work documented Harvey's struggle with testicular cancer and the novel was eventually made into the movie American Splendor staring Paul Giamatti. I re-watched the film last night which got me in the mood to dig out my AS back issues:

American Splendor Volume 2 #4 September 2008 [Overall Issue #39]

American Splendor #1 November 2006 [Overall Issue #32}

American Splendor Volume 2 #3 August 2008 [Overall Issue #38]

I hope to one day have all 39 original issues including those originally self published by Harvey himself.

Of course all this isn't completely unrelated to baseball cards. Paul Giamatti's father, A. Bartlett Giamatti, who was briefly the Commissioner of Baseball. He died suddenly in 1989 and in 1990 Topps made a card in memory of him.

1990 Topps #396 A. Bartlett Giamatti
