A lot of people point to the Dark Knight Returns as the birth of dark, gritty, realistic comics...but I look back a little earlier...some 30 odd years before, the cartoonists at Topps were laying the groundwork for this now popular format.

It could just as well be a panel from an issue of Sin City.
