A Good Collection Spoiled

What exactly do you do when a player you collect goes to a team that you don't? And furthermore, does it matter to you if they were traded or if they signed as a free agent?

I would never have included Lance Berkman in the "Players I Collect" list on the right side of my blog but whenever I would find a nice card of his at a reasonable price I would pick it up. The stadium wall relic below is one of my favorite all-time cards. Now poor Lance is a Yankee after being traded [and interesting side note in the trade details, the Astros actually paid the Yankees to take Lance]. I guess in fairness I can't say "poor Lance" because he did turn down a trade to the White Sox...and to be honest, I wouldn't be writing this post if he was the newest member of the Sox. But Lance is now the newest member of the Bronx Bombers and I'm afraid his collection will be stuck with cards pre-2010.

Wow, very cool wall relic indeed!

As for your thoughts, signing is always worse than a trade since players have almost 100% control over signing while they often have little control over a trade, especially younger guys. That said, Lance had a chance (lol) to play for the less hated White Sox, but went with the Yankees presumably for better playoff odds and the opportunity to reunite with Andy Pettite. So he and Kearns are still okay in my book - like you I wouldn't buy any of their Yankee cards, but they aren't at the level of ARod or anything yet.

Personally I collect two former Yankees, Gary Sheffield and Tanyon Sturtze. I simply avoid all Yankees cards for both guys (anything post 2003 at all for Sheff actually) and I'm just happy that neither of my guys won a World Series with the Yankees.

My few player collections revolve around the team I collect. If they weren't Dodgers when the card was made, I don't care about their cards -- unless they're in a set I collect.

That saves me (somewhat) from going insane with the Hideo Nomo collection. And, why oh why, would anyone want a card of Hershiser as a Giant?

One of my favorite Cubs, Ted Lilly, was traded this week. I like him enough that I've already collected cards of him with previous teams and will continue to look for cards next season, wherever he ends up. These days you almost have to have a few split allegiances. I wish the days of Yaz, Kaline, Gibson, Mantle. etc were still here when players spent their whole careers with one team, but they're pretty much gone. Of course, to each his/her own.
