Cardboard Recycling

There is recycling a design and then there's recycling a design.

Team 2000

There's a lot of talk about what the greatest insert set is and I'm throwing the Team 2000 inserts from the 1992 Pinnacle set into the ring.

The great nature of these inserts is that I'm reviewing them 17 years after the set came out so we can see how accurate they were in predicting the players of the future. I'm mainly highlighting some of the players that they got right in this post and as I get closer to finishing the set we will see some players that barely made it out of the 1992 season.

Upper Deck could do a nice Team 2020 for their 2010 base set and that would get me interested in Upper Deck cards again.

I've been planning out a long term project of getting a copy of every card listed in TGABCF,T&BGB but it is harder than you might think. There is no index of the cards listed and the little stories that go along with each card sometimes offer no insight to the card that is pictured.

Reconsidering '08 Stadium Club

Nearly everyone has commented on the excellent photography of the 2009 Topps set but the real quality sea change happened earlier in the 2008 Stadium Club set. Now, I know Topps messed up the set with the autographed rookie cards that don't have a corresponding base cards and the insanely limited and confusing parallel cards but the photography alone on the base cards makes this set a winner in my book.

Also, without a doubt my favorite autographs from 2008 are the Beam Team autos. If you haven't actually seen one of these in person they are semi-transparent and look exactly like stained glass.

Vida Blue: The standard by which all sensational rookie pitchers are judged.

Zack Greinke won the Cy Young with a 16-8 record for the Royals. I imagine that would translate to 21 or 22 wins on a playoff contending team. Brian Bannister went 7-12 last season and so I think that would translate to about a 10-9 or 11-8 record on a good team.


From the discount bin at the Topeka card show. I'm still trying to figure out that signature.


I like this one because of that little thread that is loose on the jersey piece.

This is the third copy of this card I've found in my travels. The much desired Richie Sexson Rookie Auto.


I would really like to know what this card went for at one time just before Super Bowl 41. It was $5 about a month ago.


Larry McCarren is one of the Packers' radio announcers and a member of the Packers Hall of Fame.


Chester's real first name is Czeslaw and he was the 1972 NFC Rookie of the Year. He also wore an awesome helmet.


Moses was initially drafted by the Portland Trailblazers but was traded to the Buffalo Braves [later the Los Angeles Clippers]. Imagine the twin towers of Bill Walton and Moses Malone. Now that would have been a team.

This was just sort of a stumbled upon auction...

I'm always struck when I flip by This Week In Baseball and hear Mel Allen's voice for part of it.

I bought this one from Gellman in one of his auctions when I was anticipating Matt Cassel to have Trent Green-like 4,000 yard passing seasons.

Luis is becoming my go-to autograph for players from the 50's and 60's. This is the third auto that I have of him.


I'd been looking to pick up one of these ticket relics from Ticket to Stardom and I came upon this in the $5.00 bin at a card show. As you can see, Topps messed up the 2nd bat piece a little.

Joe's from Wisconsin, I'm from Wisconsin. Joe went to the University of Wisconsin, I went to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire [that's about three notches down in the UW System]. Joe plays for the Browns, I feel sorry for Joe that he plays for the Browns.


Joe and the Twins have started contract negotiations and I hope they can lock him up for the long term. It just wouldn't be right for him to be in the Yankees' pin stripes.

Felipe was the 1st Dominican player in the majors and also the winningest coach in Montreal Expos history as brief as it was.


This is a shot of Al's Sports Cards, the best card shop in the Lawrence/Topeka area. I have never met Al...I'm not even sure if there is an Al.



I know all the interesting facts about Winfield [one of only two players to be drafted by baseball, football, and basketball teams] but I didn't realize that George Steinbrenner was banned from baseball in 1990 because of his payments to get embarrassing information about Winfield.


Marvelous or monstrosity?


I have no idea if this is a genuine auto or not...it was $1.00.

Vintage Sportscard's Authentic Jersey and Card Set Review

I've only seen these sets available at Toys R Us but I would imagine some of the major box stores have them too. The important thing here is that it is an "authentic jersey and card" and not an "authentic jersey card." This product is a sort of Frankenstein monster of a base card and a piece of jersey riveted together in cardboard.

Once you open up the outer wrapping you are faced with a white envelope:


I bought two of these sets. The first had a 2003 Donruss Roberto Alomar with a white jersey piece.


The second card had a 2004 Donruss Team Heroes card and a blue jersey piece.

The reverse side of these cards shows that they are made by a company called Vintage Sportscards and that these jersey pieces were obtained from Upper Deck.

Rating: C-

Besides the problem that these are odd sized and can't really be stored easily it really only works for collectors of a certain player or team. I imagine I would like these if they had a football version with Green Bay Packers players.
